Nekoweb and plain HTML

Summary
Section titled “Summary”Nekoweb is free static hosting for personal websites (launched 2024-02-25 after slips from 2022/2023 — FAQ joke: “2022 2023 2024”). Mission: old-web / personal-site passion; escape algorithms, tracking, ads; donation-funded; AI crawlers blocked. Positioning: Neocities-like alternative with extras.
The plain-HTML / personal homepage / anime shrine web craft layer (~1998–2005, revived 2020s) is handmade, maximal, intimate: tiled BGs, animated GIFs, frames, 88×31 buttons, guestbooks, MIDI/autoplay BGM, webrings. Nekoweb is a 2020s home for that spirit.
For Designy: steal authorship and place-ness; keep default product calmer; dial maximalism up in shrine / about / mood pages.
Confidence: High on platform facts (fetched homepage + FAQ). Low–Medium on treating any one featured site as aesthetic canon (styles vary wildly).
What Nekoweb offers (platform signals)
Section titled “What Nekoweb offers (platform signals)”- Customizable “site box” on explore
- SSI; non-strict CSP on free tier
- FTP / WebDAV / Git (donator)
- NekoVM (browser Linux+Node to build with any SSG)
- Password pages, custom domains
- Live cursors of other logged-in visitors
- RSS-centered discovery (not full social feed)
Culture signals from featured / most-followed: anime–otaku hubs, shrine energy, guestbooks, webrings, 88×31 buttons, autoplay BGM, WIP redesign diaries — e.g. mars.nekoweb.org, piggie.party.
Layout patterns to steal
Section titled “Layout patterns to steal”Deep dive on structure/IA (fixed widths, sidebars, tables, rails, status boxes): Y2K — Layout / structure & IA.
| Pattern | Why it works | Product vs shrine |
|---|---|---|
| Centered content card over expressive BG | Instant “homepage as place” | Both — soften BG for product |
| Nav as button row / pixel badges | Personality, linkable friendship web | Shrine / marketing; sparingly in app chrome |
| Guestbook / updates changelog | Alive, authored site | Marketing “changelog” / community; not core SaaS forms |
| SSI / includes for headers/footers | Plain-HTML maintainability | Good craft lesson even with a modern SSG |
| Site box / badge exchange | Discovery without algorithmic feed | Steal philosophy (mutual linking) |
| Optional BGM with fade-in | Atmosphere | Opt-in only; never autoplay in product |
Steal vs avoid
Section titled “Steal vs avoid”- Authorship and place-ness (this is someone’s corner)
- Handmade density on about / mood / portfolio pages
- Mutual links, RSS, buttons as social graph
- Transparent craft (view-source friendly HTML/CSS)
- Fun without dark patterns
Avoid (especially for product UI)
Section titled “Avoid (especially for product UI)”- Unskippable autoplay audio/video
- Unreadable tiled backgrounds behind body text
- Hit-counter vanity as trust signal
- Flash-era gatekeeping intros
- Uncredited scraped anime art
- Performance-hostile GIF wallpaper as default app shell
- Copying Windows glass so literally it looks like a parody skin (Windows 7 Aero)
Do / Don’t (product application)
Section titled “Do / Don’t (product application)”- Ship an RSS / updates surface; feel handmade even if built with a framework.
- Offer a “shrine mode” or personal-site skin that dials maximalism up — keep default product calmer (Frutiger Aero).
- Use button bars / webring energy on marketing and personal homepage surfaces.
- Prefer credited / owned art when shrine pages show characters (Y2K anime branch / Nightcore).
- Don’t autoplay music in product flows.
- Don’t fake hit counters / “under construction” in SaaS trust UI.
- Don’t use glitter text for body copy.
- Don’t make GeoCities chaos the default app shell.
Application recipes
Section titled “Application recipes”| Surface | Recipe |
|---|---|

| Marketing “about / mood” | Handmade density + calm Frutiger glass card for readability |
| App shell | Quiet; optional shrine skin behind a deliberate toggle |
