Gem: WidgetStar (widget.st) — small-web widget kit

Why it fits the braid

WidgetStar (Kicya) is a Neocities/Nekoweb-native widget marketplace: guestbook-era primitives (comments, hit counter, webring, status, now playing) plus community craft like AdBank (random 90s banner ads), Button Links (88×31 walls / marquees), and moon / shared-cursor toys. Site chrome is soft lavender-star Y2K — glossy pill nav, rounded display type, anime hero with a “WEBRING” tote, footer 88×31 chip. Same orbit as Nekoweb / Atabook / Nya.ie (top meta-bar). Strong Nekoweb and plain HTML · Y2K · 88x31 fit as a module kit, not a homepage skin.

Layout / craft patterns worth stealing

• Star-field ground + glossy chrome: pale pink/lavender with outlined white stars; purple/magenta gradient pills for primary actions — soft shrine energy without Frutiger glass (Y2K · Requiem Garden for paint contrast).
• Official widgets as icon grid + live preview pane: pick Comments / Chat / Status / Hit Counter / Like / Atabook / Webring / Polls / Reactions / Now Playing / Contact / Calendar / Weather / Rating and see the widget mount beside the list — teach-by-preview, not docs-first.
• Community shelf as compact cards: pixel/icon thumb + one-line pitch + author · rating · installs — discovery shaped like a personal-web directory, not an app store.
• Embed model for handmade hosts: most official widgets as scripts (fast, styles with the page); Chat as iframe with sizing hooks; FAQ explicitly promises free Neocities support (note: newer free Neocities CSP may still prefer iframe / off-host patterns — see petrapixel’s external-widgets writeup).
• Ecosystem chrome: top bar links Nekoweb · Atabook · WidgetStar · Nya.ie · WebTiles — treat as a small-web product family, not a lone SaaS island.
• Button Links + AdBank as porch modules: mutual-link walls and authentic 90s ad banners are high-value for a handmade porch without inventing them from scratch (88x31 · Sadgrl layouts).

What not to copy (for product)

• Shipping a paid “$4.99/mo premium” banner as the emotional center of a personal shrine.
• Dumping every official widget on one page (hit counter + chat + polls + weather = carnival noise).
• Treating WidgetStar’s kawaii anime mascot as default AsterisMono / Requiem Garden voice — use it as small-web craft reference, not brand identity.
• Assuming script embeds always work on locked-down free Neocities — verify embed mode per account era.
