Linux desktop shells (skeuomorph era)

Related: Windows XP Luna · Windows 7 Aero · Frutiger Aero · Y2K · Learning skeuomorphic UI craft · README

Mid-2000s Linux desktops lived inside the same skeuomorph-to-glass braid as Windows XP Luna and Windows 7 Aero, but as a theme marketplace rather than one vendor look.

  • GNOME 2 Clearlooks (+ Ubuntu Human) = soft plastic beside Metacity — Luna-adjacent warmth without XP branding
  • KDE 3 Crystal icons / Keramik–Plastik / Crystal KWin = cartoonish gloss on Kubuntu-class defaults
  • KDE 4 Oxygen + Plasma = photoreal Frutiger Aero-adjacent polish (Wikipedia’s Frutiger Aero article cites Plasma 4)
  • Compiz / Beryl / Emerald (~2006–2010) = Aero-adjacent glass spectacle (cube, wobble, real alpha)
  • GNOME 3 Adwaita (2011) = the Linux skeuomorph→flat hinge (early 3.x still had residual depth)
  • XFCE 3 / early 4 = lightweight Clearlooks-adjacent chrome — thin panels, low spectacle

Place in the braid: Remixable chrome dialects of the Luna / Aero / Frutiger family — shared lighting metaphors (top light, soft bevel, gloss, later glass) — not a third primary pole equal to Apple/Microsoft. Distro defaults (Kubuntu Crystal, Ubuntu Human, Fedora Clearlooks) mattered, but gnome-look / kde-look / Emerald meant you could cosplay Aqua, Luna, or Aero in an afternoon.

Confidence: High on KDE 3.1 Crystal+Keramik, Plastik-from-3.4, Clearlooks-as-GNOME-default-from-2.12, Oxygen photoreal break, GNOME 3/Adwaita as hinge, Compiz era peak. Medium on Crystal KWin as exact Kubuntu default span and on XFCE always shipping Clearlooks-branded chrome (theme choice varied). Medium on Compiz “influenced Vista” causality — prefer parallel / adjacent. Low treating E17 (official 2012) as a mid-2000s default.

KDE 3.5 — Crystal icons, Kicker, SuperKaramba-era density (Commons: Kde-35-fr.png).

LayerSteal
IconsCrystal SVG — cartoonish, thick outlines, candy gloss (Everaldo Coelho). High “Y2K Linux cute.”
WidgetsKeramik (default 3.1–3.3) = loud 3D; Plastik (default from 3.4) = cleaner plastic strips — prefer Plastik unless you want loud 2003.
Window chromeCrystal KWin — pseudo-transparency (wallpaper through titlebar); iconic Kubuntu Dapper→Intrepid-class look.
ShellKicker panel + applets; denser than GNOME 2.

Don’t mix Crystal candy icons with later Oxygen chrome.

IconsOxygen — photorealistic, soft shadows, consistent SVG lighting; deliberate break from Crystal cartoonish.
ChromePale Oxygen style — rounded corners, subtle gradients, restrained shine.
ShellPlasma panels + plasmoids; Kickoff; Folder View. First-party KWin effects overlap the Compiz era.

Braid: Strongest Linux Frutiger Aero exemplar. Steal soft blue-gray Oxygen + one plasmoid-like card.

LayerSteal
WidgetsClearlooks (GNOME default from 2.12) — Bluecurve roots; soft gradients, gentle 3D, “professional plastic.”
Ubuntu dialectHuman / Humanity — warm brown/orange accents on Clearlooks-family engines.
WMMetacity — restrained; no glass unless Compiz is layered on.
ShellClassic top + bottom panels; lower chrome density than KDE 3.

Braid: Luna-soft-plastic cousin, not Aero. Steal toolbar gradients + rounded Clearlooks buttons + one accent system (Human brown or Fedora blue).

Attachments/design-linux-xfce-compiz-mint.png

Linux Mint 3.0 — XFCE + Compiz Fusion (Commons: Linux_MInt_3.0_XFCE_COmpiz_Fusion.png) — lean DE with optional glass layer.

Lightweight traditional desktop (CDE-inspired roots → GTK → modular Xfce 4.0, 2003). Thin panels, modest xfwm4 decorations, GTK2 engines including Clearlooks-family. Steal: narrow panel + simple titlebar + Clearlooks widgets — “handmade site that feels like a lean 2005 Linux box,” not glass spectacle (unless you add Compiz on purpose).

Compiz / Beryl / Emerald — Aero-adjacent spectacle

Section titled “Compiz / Beryl / Emerald — Aero-adjacent spectacle”

Attachments/design-linux-compiz-cube.png

Compiz Fusion 3D cube (Commons: Compiz-fusion-3d-desktop-cube.png).

Compositing WM + plugins (cube, wobbly, expo) + Emerald (and other) decorators. Peak ~2006–2010 on Ubuntu/Fedora GNOME 2 and KDE 3. Real alpha glass, reflections, 3D workspaces — the screenshot era of “Linux can do Vista effects.”

Steal: frosted titlebars, slight translucency, one cube metaphor as flourish. Pair with Clearlooks or Plastik underneath — glass is a layer, not the whole DE. Prefer “parallel / adjacent to Aero,” not “invented Vista.”

GNOME 3 Adwaita — the hinge (not a skeuomorph target)

Section titled “GNOME 3 Adwaita — the hinge (not a skeuomorph target)”

April 2011: Adwaita + GNOME Shell replace Clearlooks + classic panels. Early 3.x still had gradients, borders, and shadows (pressable depth), then flattened through the 2010s. For this note, GNOME 3 is the exit from skeuomorph defaults on Linux — useful as a contrast slide, not a primary remix target.

Continuations: MATE (TraditionalOK ≈ Clearlooks fork), Cinnamon (traditional layout on GNOME 3 tech), Trinity (TDE) (2010 fork of KDE 3.5 — living Crystal/Plastik museum).

Hinge: On Linux, GNOME 3 Adwaita (2011) is the clearest skeuomorph→flat turn in default vendor chrome. KDE’s flat turn is later (Plasma 5 Breeze — out of scope here). Compiz glass peaks alongside Vista/7 Aero.

  1. Pick one lineage per project: Clearlooks plastic or Crystal cartoon gloss or Oxygen photo-polish or Compiz glass-over-plastic.
  2. Steal lighting rules: top-left light, 1px highlight + 1px shadow, soft vertical toolbar gradients, glossy icon speculars.
  3. Borrow one panel grammar: thin XFCE/GNOME 2 bars or dense Kicker or Plasma applets — not all three.
  4. Match icon metaphor density to the era (Crystal = playful objects; Oxygen = sober photoreal tools).
  5. Use one accent system: Ubuntu Human brown/orange or Fedora Clearlooks blue or Oxygen cool gray.
  1. Don’t mash Crystal candy icons + Oxygen chrome + Adwaita Shell + Aero glass in one hero.
  2. Don’t treat “Linux” as one aesthetic equal to Luna/Aero — call it a marketplace of dialects.
  3. Don’t use modern Breeze / GNOME 40 flat as stand-ins for this era.
  4. Don’t overdo Keramik bevels or Compiz wobble as static web chrome.
  5. Don’t treat GNOME 3 Adwaita as a skeuomorph destination — it’s the exit.

Clearlooks era reference pack (Quickshell)

Section titled “Clearlooks era reference pack (Quickshell)”

Collected 2026-09-28 for Designy’s Quickshell HTML prototype (panels + Notification Center). Full set + captions: a local scratch folder (INDEX.md, LAYOUT-NOTES.md).

Honest constraint: stock GNOME 2 had no Notification Center — only tray icons + notification-daemon balloons (+ applet menus). Steal that grammar; don’t invent a 2010s right-rail inbox and call it Clearlooks.
